What Your Lower Face Is Really Telling You

Let's talk about the part of the face that tends to get the most attention — and the least honest explanation.

The jawline. The neck. The lines that form from the corners of the mouth downward.

Most people are told this is simply aging. But after twenty years of working with women's faces, I can tell you it's considerably more specific than that. And more importantly, it's more addressable than the beauty industry would like you to believe.


What the Lower Face Is Actually Reflecting

When I assess the lower third of a client's face, I'm reading more than skin. I'm looking at a pattern of habits that have accumulated in the body over time.

The jawline holds tension. Most people who carry chronic stress hold a significant amount of it in the masseter — the large muscle that runs along the jaw. When that muscle is habitually tight, it pulls downward on the surrounding tissue and contributes to the loss of definition over time.

The neck reflects posture. Forward head position — the position most of us hold for hours every day while looking at phones and screens — compresses the front of the neck, weakens the muscles that support the chin, and creates the repeated folding that eventually becomes permanent.

The marionette lines show facial muscle engagement patterns. How often you use the lower face muscles, how you hold your expression at rest, and where you habitually carry tension all shape this area over years.

A double chin is rarely just about weight. It's about muscle tone, posture, and lymphatic drainage. A neck that's developing folds is responding to how the head is being held, not simply to time passing.

This matters — because once you understand what's actually driving these changes, you have something specific to work with.

Here's what I've observed consistently across two decades of client work.
